Managing Local Delivery and Perishables with Custom Shopify Logic

For food brands offering local delivery (bakeries, meal prep companies, specialty food producers), delivery zone management is critical. You need to validate customer addresses against your delivery area, offer zone-specific delivery windows, and calculate delivery fees based on distance.

We implement custom delivery zone logic using Shopify Functions that validate shipping addresses at checkout against defined postal code or radius-based zones. Orders outside the delivery area are automatically routed to standard shipping or blocked with a clear message directing the customer to local pickup.

Shipping perishable goods requires logic that standard shipping calculators do not support: maximum transit time restrictions, cold chain packaging cost calculations, and blackout dates during extreme weather.

We build custom shipping Functions that restrict delivery options based on product tags (perishable, frozen, ambient), customer distance from the fulfillment center, and real-time weather data. This prevents spoilage, reduces claims, and ensures customers receive products in optimal condition.

Food delivery customers expect to choose their delivery day and time window. We build custom date picker components on the product page or in the cart that display available delivery slots based on fulfillment capacity, lead time requirements, and zone-specific delivery schedules.

The selected delivery window is stored as an order metafield, making it visible to fulfillment teams and available for automated routing via Shopify Flow.
