Our E-commerce QA Checklist: Testing Shopify Stores Before Launch

Launching a Shopify store without comprehensive quality assurance is like flying an airplane without a pre-flight checklist. Most of the time nothing goes wrong, but when it does, the consequences are severe: lost revenue, damaged reputation, and customer data issues.

This is the QA testing checklist The Scale Room runs on every Shopify store before launch. It covers functional testing, payment validation, cross-device compatibility, SEO verification, and performance benchmarking.

1) Functional Testing

Functional testing verifies that every user-facing feature works correctly across all scenarios.

Functional Test Checklist

Test every item on this list before publishing your store.

  • Product browsing: verify all collection pages load correctly with proper filtering and sorting.
  • Product pages: confirm all variants display correct pricing, images swap on variant selection, and inventory levels reflect accurately.
  • Cart functionality: test add to cart, update quantity, remove items, and apply discount codes.
  • Checkout flow: complete a full test purchase with every available payment method.
  • Customer accounts: test registration, login, password reset, and order history access.
  • Search: verify search returns relevant results for product names, SKUs, and common misspellings.
  • Navigation: test all menu links, breadcrumbs, and footer links on both mobile and desktop.
  • Forms: test all contact forms, newsletter signups, and custom forms for submission and validation.

2) Payment and Checkout Testing

Payment testing is non-negotiable. Every payment method must be tested with real transactions (using Shopify's test mode) to verify the complete flow from checkout to order confirmation.

Payment Test Scenarios

Run each of these scenarios through to completion.

  • Successful credit card transaction with order confirmation email delivery.
  • Declined credit card with appropriate error messaging to the customer.
  • Express checkout (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay) from both product page and cart.
  • Discount code application with correct price adjustment and order total.
  • Tax calculation accuracy across different shipping addresses and tax jurisdictions.
  • Shipping rate calculation for each shipping method and delivery zone.
  • Refund processing to verify funds return correctly through each payment method.

3) Cross-Device and Cross-Browser Testing

Your store must function flawlessly across the devices and browsers your customers actually use. We test on real devices, not just browser emulators, because emulators miss touch-specific issues, viewport rendering differences, and mobile keyboard behavior.

At minimum, test on the latest versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge on desktop, plus Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS for mobile. Pay special attention to Safari on iOS, which has the most rendering quirks among modern browsers.

Actionable Insights

  • Complete a full test purchase using every payment method before launch, including declined card scenarios.
  • Test on real mobile devices (both iOS and Android), not just browser developer tools emulation.
  • Verify all automated emails (order confirmation, shipping notification, abandoned cart) trigger correctly with proper content.
  • Run Google's Rich Results Test to validate Product structured data before launch.
  • Benchmark performance on launch day and set that score as the baseline for ongoing monitoring.

Conclusion

A rigorous QA process is the difference between a smooth launch and a crisis. The time invested in comprehensive testing is insignificant compared to the cost of launching with broken checkout, incorrect pricing, or missing functionality.

The Scale Room runs this complete Shopify QA testing checklist on every store we build and every major update we deploy. If you are preparing for a launch and want expert QA validation, we can ensure your store goes live without surprises.
